Just after sculpting Form No. 2 for UCI's Chancellor's Rose Garden in 2000, I was asked to design a ceremonial graduation mace. I immediately thought of the mace forming the head of an anteater, which was UCI's mascot.
If you look closely at the above photo, you'll see that there are two eyes just below his upper hand and a snout at the bottom. There are also anteater claws holding up the golden globe. Below the globe are the names of all of UCI's Chancellors.
